I could not get enough of this view - a sea of red tiled roofs stretching out to meet the Adriatic. And with Dubrovnik being less than a two and a half hour flight from London, it's the perfect destination for a long weekend away!

We spent four nights in Dubrovnik in mid-October. I'd highly recommend travelling in the off season if can (May/June or September/October). Despite it nearing the end of the tourist season in Dubrovnik, the streets were still busy with sightseers and cruise ship passengers, but not overcrowded. We were always able to get a seat in a restaurant or bar, and the City Walls were easy to walk along, and pause when you needed to (which I did, because there were are A LOT of stairs - 1,080 of them).

We stayed at Apartments Stradun on Petilovrijenci Street, right in the heart of the Old Town. Brilliant location and the Studio apartment was gorgeous.

We were so lucky that the weekend we arrived in Dubrovnik, it was having an unexpected October heatwave (26C most days). Which meant that we spent the afternoon of our first full day in Dubrovnik on Banje Beach, only a ten minute walk from the Old Town. On one half of the beach you can rent a sun lounger for the day, but the other half is FREE! Just bring your beach towel.

Around every corner in the Old Town there's something beautiful to marvel at - best seen with a cone of gelato in hand :)

In the daytime the Old Town is pretty, but at night, it sparkles. One of my favourite things about our trip was wandering the streets in the evening after dinner with all of the buildings lit up, and the harbour twinkling with light. It was so lovely!

Another of Dubrovnik's attractions worth visiting in the evening are the Cable Cars. A return journey costs 140 kuna, and there is no time limit on how long you spend at the upper station. There are several viewing platforms at the top, as well as a restaurant and cocktail bar. Watching the sun set across the Old Town and the coastline from up here was stunning.

*travel tip: the coach bus from the Old Town to Dubrovnik Airport stops right beside the Cable Cars as its pick up point to take you to the airport. To check their daily schedule, click here. 70 kuna return, and takes less than thirty minutes.

Lokrum Island is the perfect day trip from the Old Port in Dubrovnik. 120 kuna will get you a return to and from the island, which is only ten minutes by boat from the mainland.

Peacocks and rabbits roam wild across the island. There is a small botanic gardens, forest walks, ruins of a Benedictine Monastery, The Dead Sea bathing pool and more to wander around. Definitely worth a visit!

On our final day in Dubrovnik, we walked the City Walls. If there's only ONE thing you do when visiting Dubrovnik, it should be this. The views are beyond spectacular!

120 kuna will get you your ticket onto the wall. The walk takes approximately two hours, but it went by so fast - there was just so much to see. Bring water and sunscreen, it gets HOT up on the wall!

I can't recommend Dubrovnik enough! It's fantastic for a few nights stay, and even if you're looking for something a bit longer, it's a great base to island-hop from, with lots of full day excursions offered from the Old Port.

*travel tip: The Old Town in Dubrovnik is predominantly closed between November-Easter, so plan your trip outside of the these months to get the most out of your holiday.
