Wonderful York!

York is one of my favourite places to visit in England! Picturesque, with winding cobbled streets and slanted medieval shops leaning into one another, you feel as if you've been transported to the past.

The Shambles (on the left) was apparently the inspiration for JK Rowling's Diagon Alley. It used to be the butchers street in York, its timber-framed buildings dating back to the 14th century, but now houses a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants.

The stunning York Minster dominates the skyline. The current structure (there has been a church presence on this site since the early 600s) was started in 1220 and completed in 1472, with continued restoration over the centuries.
Take a walk along York's City walls (much of which were constructed between the 12th-14th century, though York has been a walled city since the Roman times) for some lovey views of York. Accessing the walls is free. For more information on their opening and closing times, click here.
I'd definitely recommend a visit to Barley Hall. This restored Medieval Townhouse is so beautiful. Wander from room to room at your own pace. There are lots of interactive displays to entertain all ages and gives a real flavour of what it would be like to live in the medieval period (well, an affluent flavour ;)
Tickets are only £6 online (with an additional £1 booking fee), or consider purchasing York's Pastport if you're planning on visiting several of York's attractions. The Jorvik Centre exploring York's Viking occupation (the Viking's inhabited York from around 866-954AD) is brilliant.
Lovely in all seasons, and rumoured to have enough pubs to visit one every day of the year without going to the same one twice (cheers!), make York the destination for your next weekend away.
